PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

New York Presbyterian Hospital, New York, NY

Senior Database Administrator (Technical Specialist) (January 2015 – Present)

  • Championed and implemented a Data Warehouse Fast Track deployment to migrate a 25 TB data warehouse from I/O-bound hardware. Collaborated with system and SAN engineers to evaluate disk subsystem latency and procure a Cisco C240 with both local SSD and Pure Storage m20 FlashArray SAN storage running SQL Server 2016. Ran disk subsystem and SQL performance tests using DiskSpeed and TPC-H benchmarks. Rebalanced 8 TB of incorrectly partitioned data by writing a VB.NET console application to conduct multi-threaded table-to-table bulk load operations. Dramatically increased disk subsystem throughput from 800 MB/s to 11 GB/s.

  • Primary applications DBA for the corporate IT BI unit, designing and implementing a proprietary operational data store for hospital-wide Eclipsys Sunrise Clinical Manager content on three SQL Server 2014 instances deployed on VMware and Dell PowerEdge platforms running Windows Server 2012 with both EMC SAN and Dell PowerVault DAS storage. Implemented 100+ project configuration-based SSIS packages to perform ETL operations from SCM hosted at AllScripts TSC to NYP’s datacenter. Utilizing Enterprise-edition features including row compression and partitioning for long-term scalability.

  • Administering 20+ TB of clinical data gathered from various structured HL7 and relational data sources into Microsoft Amalga, deployed across five instances of SQL Server 2008 R2 on Dell PowerEdge hosts running Windows Server 2008 R2 on EMC SAN storage.

  • Established new security protocols for the above portfolio, implementing standardized database roles for 30+ team members, including admins, developers and analysts, integrated with native SQL auditing to oversee access to PHI and PII content. Collaborating with corporate IT security personnel to establish minimally-privileged service accounts and deliver audit logs for HIPAA compliance.

  • Improving deployment practices team-wide through implementation of RedGate SQL Source Control with Subversion and coordinating all change control requests through ServiceNow. Actively engaging developers in code review to identify query inefficiencies. Implementing MDW for real-time performance monitoring. Designing and deploying SSRS content for daily operational reporting needs.

Senior Database Administrator (IS Programmer Specialist) (Feb 2013–Dec 2014)
Senior Data Warehouse DBA (June 2007 – Feb 2013)

  • Senior DBA in a four-DBA unit supporting 107 production SQL instances with 2,300 DBs and 18 TB of data, including 36 active/passive clusters and 40 VMware guests. Utilizing Quest Spotlight and SQL Server Agent alerts to maintain 24/7/365 availability. Participating in week-long on-call rotations responding to incidents coordinated through ServiceNow. Sponsored and implemented BugNet for internal work log tracking.

  • Providing development support for over 200 non-production SQL instances, participating with application development teams in both corporate and clinical disciplines to refresh environments with production backup restores, establish role-based access control, validate data models and tune T-SQL components. Collaborating with VLDB application teams to implement Enterprise-level features of SQL Server, including partitioning, P2P replication, encryption and compression

  • Designed and constructed a VB.NET application to poll the above production support portfolio to verify the presence of recent full backups, perform restores to test servers using Quest LiteSpeed and T-SQL syntaxes, execute DBCC CHECKDB operations on each restored backup, log results to a datamart and email the DBA team real-time of any corruption detected

  • Designed and constructed a VB.NET application to poll the above production support portfolio to enumerate all logins, including Windows group memberships, all server fixed-role permissions, active DB user mappings and DB fixed-role permissions. Prepared SSRS reports for use by application owners and the Security department to be able to determine security profile compliance and fulfill external audit requirements on-demand.

  • Implemented Quest Capacity Manager and Ola Hallengren Maintenance Solution scripts to schedule index maintenance windows. Designed and constructed a VBA macro in Excel to poll a specified instance, plot its annual growth rate based on full backup history and construct T-SQL to expand DB files for 12 months of expected growth.

  • Utilizing a combination of Quest Spotlight, PerfMon, SQLDiag, SQL Nexus, Profiler, SSMS standard reports, DMV queries, RML utilities and execution plan analysis to respond to application team reports of performance issues.

  • Applying knowledge of QLogic SANSurfer, SQLIO and Crystal DiskMark in assessing performance of SAN-attached storage and PowerVault DAS appliances, experimenting with execution throttle settings, trace flags, multiple filegroup and multiple DB file strategies.

  • Participating in periodic Microsoft True-Up initiatives to identify and uninstall dormant SQL instances prior to EA renewals. Used SCCM and MAP in 2012 to save $480,000 in unnecessary licensing costs.
